"A Little Bird Told Me"

This week’s song is New Orlean’s jazz/blues singer Blue Lu Barker’s charming rendition of “A Little Bird Told Me”. Until last month, I had never heard this infectious upbeat tune written by Harvey Oliver Brooks. In fact this song’s melody is so contagious that it has officially become my ear worm. In case you haven’t heard that phrase it refers to a catchy piece of music that continually repeats through a person's mind after it is no longer playing whether you want it to or not. I find myself randomly starting to sing “A Little Bird…” throughout the day and my husband is not taking it well. The good news is.......

It's Halloween, The Lamp is Lit

As an exercise instructor I take full advantage of any opportunity to incorporate musical selections that help celebrate special days and holidays throughout the year. Today is Halloween, the perfect opportunity to do just that. Annual favourites in my classes include Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters” from the 1982 film, “The Monster Mash” written in 1962 by Bobby Pickett and Leonardo L. Capizzi and the 1958 hit “The Witch Doctor” composed by David Seville. The last tune hit the pop charts in 1960 when three famous chipmunks......

My Grandfather’s Clock

My Grandfather’s Clock

One of the biggest thrills I get as an older adult fitness instructor, is the thrill of seeking out and selecting music for my classes that they will recognize and enjoy. If I may go one step further, I feel incredible personal satisfaction when I find a song I’ve never heard before, take a chance bringing it to my participants and then find out that I have scored a musical touchdown. I very recently had this experience with a tune called “My Grandfather’s Clock” written by Henry Clay Work in 1876.

Fly Me to the Moon

Fly Me to the Moon

Can’t believe I’ve gone three weeks without suggesting a tune from someone in the Rat Pack? In case that’s not a term familiar to you, this title, created by the press in the 1960‘s was given to a well known group of actor/singer friends, three of whom were and still are famous for their exceptional vocal skills and sex appeal. Humphrey Bogart was the originally member and leader until his death in 1957.
