T’is the season so for this week and next week my Song of The Week will reflect this joyful time of year. A Christmas song for today and a Chanukkah tune next week. Both holidays begin on the same evening this year. In my family, it’s a double whammy but a good one.
I happen to be a huge fan of 70’s R&B so I’ve chosen a very cool version of “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer” performed by The Temptations that I have only just discovered. The song was track one on the Temptations Christmas Card album released in October of 1970. For those of you interested in music trivia, the accomplished songwriter/performer and now president of the American Society of Authors, Composer and Publishers Paul Williams joins the Temptations with his background vocals on this recording. Because this track has such a unique arrangement and different musical feel it provides the opportunity to incorporate a song people may normally get a bit tired of hearing in December. It sounds different enough to keep your set list interesting and recognizable enough to honour the time of year. The tempo is perfect for older adult participants; actually it would be great in any fitness class when combined with the right choreography.
Some general advice when it comes to creating your holiday set list. Among the old favourites such as Bing Crosby’s “Frosty The Snowman” sprinkle your set list with some less popular versions of holiday classics. A visit to i-tunes or Spotify for example will guide you to many very interesting possibilities. I do keep Spotify at the ready during my classes in case one of my participants has a song request. They always get a kick out of my ability to be an instant DJ! It’s so wonderful to be able to oblige them so quickly and easily with the music they want to hear.
