Hello Dolly

Broadway musicals are a wonderful source of music possibilities for your older adult fitness classes. There are really no age limitations when it comes to this category as the evolution of what’s continually happening over the decades on the broadway stage clearly demonstrates. There are new works such as you can’t get a seat for this play until well into next year, “Hamilton”, revivals of old works like “West Side Story” and “Fiddler on the Roof” and long runs of currently still running classic favourites such as “Phantom of the Opera”, “Chicago” and “Cats”.

One of my favourite films based on a broadway play is “Hello Dolly!” and, one of my all time favourite songs is “Hello Dolly!” so this weeks Song of the Week is….. drum roll please……”Hello Dolly!”. The original Broadway stage production of this musical which opened in 1964 starring the incredible Carol Channing was written by Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart. The script for the play was based on Thornton Wilder’s 1938 farce The Merchant of Yonkers. Wilder later revised and retitled his work “The Matchmaker”; the name used for the first ever stage production. On March 17, 2016 Broadway will be debuting a new production of “Hello Dolly” starring Bette Midler and David-Hyde Pierce. I anticipate it will be a grand success.

The version of this song that I have chosen for variety’s sake, is the French adaptation sung by the sixties singing sensation Petula Clark. This is a favourite with my participants as it is so recognizable. Another advantage is that it’s structure easily facilitates choreography; no odd starts, stops or irregular phrases. You’ll definitely find folks spontaneously smile and sing along with the song and that’s always a good thing!
